No doubt Croatia is one of the most popular summer destinations for Europeans. And even many foreigners living further away from Europe enjoy visiting Croatia or have it on their bucket list for the near future. No wonder, Croatia is truly beautiful and have a lot to offer to its visitors.

Although the country is often considered the budget or quick option for summer holidays in Central Europe, mainly because of its proximity, it is nowhere behind other coastal countries in Europe with its beautiful holiday spots, accommodation, gastronomy or hospitality.

But what is Croatia known for? Firstly, its cities… everyone has definitely heard about Zagreb, Dubrovnik or Split. Well known are also its parks such as Krka National Park or Plitvice Lakes National Park. But most importantly its coast and its islands….and those island, that’s where you want to be!

So how many islands is there? In Croatia apart from its beautiful coast itself, they have total of 718 islands plus 389 small islets. Definitely many places to explore here! This large number makes Croatian archipelago the greatest archipelago in Adriatic Sea. Moreover, it is the second largest archipelago in whole Mediterranean Sea defeated only by Greece and
its 2000 islands.

Out of its 718 islands, approximately 47 islands have more than 2 inhabitants. People on the islands are mostly working in agriculture specializing in wine and olive growing, fishing and in tourism. Supposedly the island life it’s not so easy and the cost of living is approximately 30% higher than on the mainland.

Therefore, the Croatian government supports the islanders in various ways to help them and to help the local economy. The largest and most populated island of Croatia is Krk with its 20,000 inhabitants. Right behind Krk there are islands of Brač, Korčula and Hvar. These are usually also the best known and most visited islands of Croatia. 

Croatia as a country has a rich history and even its islands were not left behind. Many of Croatian islands are said to be inhabited hundreds of years B.C. The oldest and longest inhabited island in Croatia is believed to be Hvar. Hvar´s first inhabitants lived on the island between years 3500 and 2500 B.C.
